Joint Statement
The Prime Minister of
India and Pakistan held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of UN
General Assembly in New York on 23rd September, 1998.
Their discussions covered
the whole range of bilateral relations. The two Prime Ministers also
carried out a detailed review of new developments in the region during
the past few months.
They reaffirmed their
common belief that an environment of durable peace and security was in
the supreme interest of both India and Pakistan, and of the region as a
whole. They expressed their determination to renew and reinvigorate
efforts to secure such an environment. They agreed that the peaceful
settlement of all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, was
essential for this purpose.
The two leaders reiterated
their commitment to create conditions which would enable both countries
to fully devote their resources, both human and material, to improving
the lives of their people, particularly the poorest among them.
The two Prime Ministers
noted with satisfaction the agreement reached between the Foreign
Secretaries on operationalizing the mechanism to address all items in
the agreed agenda of 23rd June, 1997 in a purposeful and composite
manner. They directed the Foreign Secretaries, accordingly, to resume
the dialogue on the agreed dates.
