Musharraf’s Latest Antics
Editorial Board

Pakistan’s Dictator Pervez Musharraf recently made a drastic change in his stance and proposed various options to resolve the Kashmir issue. These options included demilitarization of Kashmir and the option of independent Kashmir as well. This latest change of mind is music to J&K Liberation Front’s (JKLF) ears. JKLF has all along demanded absolute independence for Kashmir. JKLF Chief in Pakistan, Amanullah Khan even welcomed Musharraf’s proposal and said that it was for the first time after the death of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1948 that the Head of the State of Pakistan had accepted this basic right of Kashmiris.

Time will only tell what the REAL reasons behind Musharraf’s change of tone were. But based on historical facts, one should put very little credence to what Musharraf says and proposes. Musharraf has time and again promised drastic policy changes to counter global Islamic terrorism. But he has consistently broken every promise he has ever made.

Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf can hoodwink Colin Powell, Richard Armitage and George Bush. But he should not be allowed to play games with Indians and Government of India. For last three years, Musharraf has been successfully playing double games with United States. On one hand he has been coddling Powell and his team and on another hand he has been sleeping with the masters of global terrorism. US authorities do not seem to understand Musharraf’s tactics and psyche. Musharraf has brilliantly played this game in which he is milking United States and at the same time keeping his Islamic terrorist brothers happy and satisfied. He is now trying to play the same game in Kashmir. Indian government is absolutely right in ignoring Musharraf’s latest antics and not responding to these preposterous proposals. Government of India needs to continue to take a harder stand and not engage in any negotiations with Pakistan unless the cross-border terrorism is completely stopped and eradicated.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s latest announcement regarding troop reduction in Kashmir valley is a wrong step at this time. He seems to be falling right into Musharraf’s trap. It is ironic that on the same day when Indian Prime Minister made this announcement, terrorists sent and supported by Pakistan attacked a CRPF camp in Srinagar and killed many Indian soldiers. Under such conditions, it is foolish to reduce the troop levels in Kashmir. Reducing troop levels in Kashmir at this point is nothing but inviting more brutal attacks in future. Pakistan and its terrorists are looking for a breather and time to regroup and reenergize its cadres. And India should not be falling into Musharraf’s trap and give them that time. Time is of the essence here and India needs to keep the pressure on until Pakistan and its terrorists give up the mode of terrorism.

Regarding the proposals thrown by Musharraf, India needs to make its stand loud and clear that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India. And thus the question of independent Kashmir does not even arise and cannot be discussed. India needs to convey the message in much stronger terms that the issue that needs to be resolved is the illegal occupation of Pak-Occupied Kashmir and Northern Areas by Pakistan. That is the issue that needs to be resolved. Nothing more, nothing less.
