Terrorism Update
By Subodh Atal
Kashmir Herald Staff Writer

The month of April brought further signs of an impending storm in Kashmir this summer. Persistent reports of thousands of Al Qaida and Taliban gathering in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in preparation for infiltration to the Indian side of the LOC. These reports were borne out by the increased number of encounters near the LOC with Indian security personnel. Apart from targeting of politicians and minorities, there have also been hundreds of cases of killings of civilians who are suspected of helping security personnel. A sense of fear pervades the entire state, with people afraid to speak out against the atrocities of Pakistani terrorists. Massacres, especially of Hindus, continue in the state at the hands of the terrorists.

The leadership of the Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest Pakistani terrorist group operating in J&K, reiterated that ‘jihad’ was the only way to achieve its ends of establishing an Islamic regime in the state. Gen. Musharraf’s point man in POK, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Khan, also proclaimed jihad as a valid tool in resolving the Kashmir issue.

The highlights of terrorism events for the month of April are reported below:
